Not to excuse parents from watching over their children, but it isn’t like gorillashave established rules they’re supposed to follow that are meant to safeguard against them killing children. Also, Accords aren’t critically endangered.

I mean, I understand that kids are small and not easy to see, but that doesn’t mean that drivers shouldn’t be paying attention anyway. I’m a normalish sized adult and I’ve still almost been hit by people driving like assholes.

In the former case the parents, and not the gorilla, were at fault. The gorilla was an innocent victim of (indirectly) the parents of the kid.

In the latter case the driver, not the parent, was at fault. That’s assuming the parent/kid had a green light. The kid was an innocent victim of the driver.

The difference is quite clear, is it not?

According to PETA, this is the truth.

If you look at the articles that came out a bit after the initial emotional little girl getting hit ones it turned out that the mom was hoofing it against the ‘don’t walk’ signal and had left her daughter a good 12 feet behind. Same lady had her son hit and killed out in the automobile right of way a few years before then. Two pre-schoolers killed by cars under the care and watchfulness of the same mother only a few years separated.

It goes against the 'don't blame the victim' trope, but she definitely should be apportioned some if not all of the fault.

I think both are 100% parenting fails.

Just because the zoo doesn’t have something preventing children from sitting on the railing over a gorilla / lion / painted dog exhibit doesn’t mean that it’s safe to do so without risk of falling in.

Along the same lines, just because a motorist should stop before hitting a child in a crosswalk doesn’t mean that they will.

In both cases, it’s the parent’s job to protect their children from danger.

I agree with you, but at the same time, as a parent of a 2-year-old, they are masters of a quick escape.

I feel like there comes a time in parenting when 90% of the job is just keeping your kid from accidentally killing themselves/being harmed by the world at large.

I didn’t know. That lady certainly is to blame. Now I do know the stories are similar; shitty parents endangering their kids.

Yeah, the initial stories all wrote that the lady was crossing with the signal and the driver just didn’t expect their to be a child trailing. Mom and uncle were both quoted toeing that line. Lots of ‘shame on drivers’ articles were written, including the overly toxic Gawker one.

A couple days after the event some security footage was released and it turned out they were walking against the signal and the driver, who had already committed to the turn juked to avoid the lady who was running across (with a baby in a stroller, no less) at the same time the little girl froze up. The mom was holding her hand as they approached the intersection then dropped it when she sped up to a run to cross and she fell behind right to where the driver turned to avoid the mom.

It’s a very real world example for the trolley problem as people push for autonomous cars. Car commits to the turn because, due to signals and oncoming speed it has enough time to clear. After committing two rogue variables appear. The ‘Do Nothing’ option ends up hitting a woman with a stroller; Option 1: ‘Evasive maneuver’, either hits the child or goes onto the sidewalk where there are other pedestrians; Option 2: ‘Stop’ either ends up with oncoming traffic T-boning the driver or performing their own evasive maneuver which hits the mother/stroller, child, or the folks on the sidewalk. There’re no good or even necessarily 'best of bad' answers. What they plug into those car's logic will have no shit life&death consequences and sorting out the liability is going to be a hell of a societal problem to work through, probably over decades.
